Information We Collect

Health data. With your permission, the app reads from Apple Health your workouts (the kind of workout, when it started and ended, and the active calories it burned), your daily active calories, and the routes of your workouts. When you start a workout in the app, on your Apple Watch or iPhone, it reads your calories, heart rate and distance, and depending on the workout your pace, steps, cadence, power or swimming strokes, to show them while you move and in the summary after, and saves the finished workout to Apple Health. These measurements stay on your device; only the workout's calories and the other fields below are sent. That is the only thing it writes to Apple Health. For each workout it sends our server the kind of workout, its calories, its start and end time, Apple Health's identifier for it (so the same workout is never counted twice), whether it was entered by hand and whether it was recorded by Apple's own apps or by 1Calorie. Once a day ends, it also sends that day's active calories outside of workouts. Routes never leave your device.

Your city. Your calories count for the city you moved in. The app works the city out on your device: from the start of the workout's route, or for a workout without one (indoors, a pool) from your device's approximate location, with your permission. It sends only the city's name, its country and region, and the city's center (looked up from its name, so it can be placed on the map). Your location itself is never sent or stored.

No account. There is no sign-in. The first time the app opens it makes a random key and keeps it in your device's Keychain (synced by iCloud Keychain if you use it); your Apple Watch gets the same key from your iPhone. Your data is kept on our server under that key. We store only a scrambled form of it, and nothing that says who you are: no name, no email, no Apple ID.

What other people see. The server gives you a random nickname (like "Frosty Otter 42"); you can't type one. Other people see that nickname on a city, with how many calories you added to it over the last week, and the cheers you give a city. On the website's city map, anyone can see each city's calories this week and how many people added to them, but not who. Nobody sees your workouts, their times or where exactly you were.

Help requests. If you contact us through the Help page, we keep the email address, subject, description and any files you send, so we can answer you.

Technical logs. The servers that host 1Calorie keep request logs, which can include your IP address and device type, to keep the service secure and to fix problems. We also count visits to the website ourselves: the page, your country, the site that linked you here and whether you're on a phone or a computer. No cookie is set and no IP address is kept for this.

Your health data is used only to run the game: your collection and the city totals. It is never used for advertising or marketing, never sold, and never shared with anyone except the hosting provider below. We do not show ads, we do not use third-party analytics or tracking cookies, and we do not track you across other companies' apps or websites.

Who Processes Your Data

The service is hosted on Cloudflare, which handles the requests the app and your browser make to us and stores your workouts, cities, cheers and the help requests you send. Apple Health data is read on your device by Apple's HealthKit, under Apple's privacy policy. The city map on our website (/map) draws its base map with tiles your browser loads from OpenFreeMap, which therefore sees your IP address and the area you look at, under its own terms; nothing about you or your workouts is sent to it.

Deleting Your Data

In the app, Settings → Delete my data removes everything we keep under your key: your workouts, your calories in every city, your nickname and your cheers. You can also send a request from the Help page. Deleting the app alone leaves the copy on our server, so it can come back when you reinstall. Revoking the app's access in the Health app stops it reading anything new.

Children

1Calorie is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect their data.
